    President Ronald Reagan mentioned the word AIDS for the first time in public

    World AIDS Day established on Dec. 1
  • 1991
    Basketball player Earvin "Magic" Johnson announced he was HIV positive and retires from the NBA; 10 million have HIV worldwide
  • 1993
    President Bill Clinton established the White House office of National AIDS Policy
  • 1997
    AIDS-related deaths in U.S. declined by more than 40 percent compared to previous year
  • 1998
    Minority AIDS Initiative created after African-American leaders declare a "state of emergency"
  • 2007
    President George W. Bush called on Congress to reauthorize $30 billion to the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief
  • 2009
    More than 31 million people worldwide are living with HIV/AIDS
